P7:1SMA presents NGOPI,
Norhaizad Adam's 2nd full-length creation
with the dance company.
NGOPI, short for mengopi, is the act of drinking kopi (coffee in Malay). It is typically a gathering of a group of people at a kedaikopi (coffee shop in Malay), where they discuss just about anything. A desire to debate, a compulsion to persuade.
In this work, Norhaizad has gathered a diverse team of local and international dancers alongside a stellar creative team to devour theflavors concealed in a common cup of commerce.

“I am very glad that this company is initiating projects informed by a sense of social justice. Activist agendas are not easy to combine satisfactorily with art, and choreography is one of the most difficult mediums through which to convey non-aesthetic arguments. Yet Ngopi as an endeavor fits well with the thread of contemporary discourse on choreography as an ideal tool for audience activation and empowerment. ”
